Major Recycling Milestone for Newtownabbey Borough Council

PRESS RELEASE
December 2008
Newtownabbey Borough Council has become Northern Ireland’s first local authority to introduce pioneering facilities which will significantly enhance recycling services in public areas.

As part of the Council’s recycling strategy, 10 nodeº® recycling centres have replaced traditional litterbins in the Borough’s parks and scenic areas. Each unit is able to hold more than 3,000 litres of waste and is designed to complement its surroundings. It also encourages the public to separate materials such as glass or paper from rubbish that would normally be sent to landfill.

Lisa Mayne, Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Recycling Manger, comments; “The Council has introduced several recycling initiatives in recent years such as kerbie boxes, a food waste service and new machinery to increase efficiency at the Bruslee facility. As a result our recycling rates have dramatically increased but in order to meet strict EU landfill targets, we had to extend the positive culture of recycling away from the home and ensure more facilities are available in open areas. This is a key factor in maintaining our high civic amenity standards. I am confident the new easy-to-use nodeº® containers will make it more convenient for people to recycle on the move.”

Supplied by Sturdy Products Ltd, the nodeº® is designed by Taylor, the UK’s leader in waste and recycling containment solutions.

Hugh Kelly Director of Environment Services said; “There is a real and recognised need for Northern Ireland to increase its recycling rates in order that it meets EU landfill diversion targets for 2010. The proactive stance taken by Newtownabbey Borough Council shows what can be achieved by turning a recycling challenge into a reality.”

The node’sº® modular, wheeled design enables it to be used in multiples from one to four. It is capable of fitting into confined corners, against walls or as a central feature in a public area.  It can also be designed to incorporate lighting or signage. For increased security, the nodeº’s galvanised steel body also offers protection from fire and vandalism. A security post fixed to a
concrete base prevents any unauthorised movement.
