New Oil Storage Tank Regulations for Northern Ireland09-Sep-2010
The Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland have issued a Consultation on the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations (Norther Ireland) 2010.
The purpose of the new regulation is to prevent the pollution of water ways and streams from the result of an accidental oil spill from inadequate oil storage facilities.
All industries, commercial premises, institutional/residential (schools, day care centres, hospitals and nursing homes) premises must have a secondary containment system or a bund to ensure that any leaks or spills from an oil tank will be contained in the outer protective layer.
The regulation applies to over ground oil storage tanks with a capacity greater than 200Ltrs.
The regulation will be phased in as follows
- New premises - within 6 months
- Existing premised within 10meters of a water way - within 2 years
- All others - within 4 years
The regulation is expected to come into existence in October 2010.
Sturdy Products Ltd would asvise all commmercail premises in Northern Ireland that now is a good time to consider purchasing a bunded tank.
